Who Are the Best Teams in England in the Past 10 Years?

Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City side also deserves recognition, following their remarkable journey towards winning their first-ever league and FA Cup double under Roberto Mancini and Pep Guardiola. Their rise through the ranks from underdog status is worthy of note in history books.

Pochettino recently claimed that Chelsea has been England’s best team in recent decades – is this true?

    Manchester City

Manchester City are one of the most successful English sides over the past 10 years, rising from their neighbour’s shadow and emerging as modern-day English giants due to an ownership change. Boasting multiple Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup victories this season alone – there is much reason for celebration at City!

City have won four Premier League titles since being acquired by Abu Dhabi United Group in 2007; including an amazing triumph under Sergio Aguero’s stoppage time goal against archrival Manchester United in 2012. Under Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini they captured two further league championships while Pep Guardiola has seen them take out both League Cup titles as well as Europa League success.

    Chelsea

Many milestones can be counted among the highlights of the past decade: from Manchester City’s stunning late Premier League title win in 2012 (Aguerroooo!) and Leicester City’s unlikely 2015 championship victory, to Chelsea winning six major trophies including their last-gasp Premier League crown under Aguerrooooo! and Leicester City sweeping up five at 5000-1 odds-defying championship triumph. But when it comes to sheer volume of silverware won, one team truly stands out: Barcelona.

Chelsea have achieved amazing success under Roman Abramovich, winning 19 trophies during his tenure, including three Premier League championships, four FA Cup wins and two UEFA Europa League triumphs.

Noteworthy is the Blues’ success was driven by their outstanding defense, led by Claude Makelele, Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho, William Gallas, and Petr Cech. Additionally, midfield players Frank Lampard, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard made for an effective attacking force; making this team worthy contenders to rank amongst England’s greatest sides ever seen in football history.

    Manchester United

Manchester United remains one of England’s most beloved clubs, revered for their many titles won under Sir Alex Ferguson and their dramatic last-gasp wins in the Premier League that are still talked about today.

Red Devils fans have witnessed various managers win FA Cup titles while star players such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo have left an indelible mark on Old Trafford.

London club Chelsea have managed to move into fourth place despite their ownership transition in 2012. Before Roman Abramovich arrived at Chelsea they only won one league championship and three FA Cup trophies combined, yet now boast seven of each as well as having secured quarter of a European championship crown.

    Tottenham

Tottenham was often overshadowed by their northern neighbors and found it difficult to break into the top tier of English football. Keith Burkinshaw became manager after Bill Nicholson left in 1974, and quickly made an impactful statement by signing players such as Ricky Villa, Ossie Ardiles and Chris Waddle – among many others.

Since their promotion to the Premier League in 1999, Spurs have won multiple league titles and won FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup trophies twice each. Furthermore, they constructed a new state-of-the-art stadium while having high-profile managers such as Mauricio Pochettino lead their club.

Talking about England’s top teams over the past decade would not be complete without mentioning Leicester City and their amazing comeback against all odds to claim the 2015/16 Premier League championship title, an extraordinary story which must be seen to believe. West Ham have also been consistently good lately and boast a player in Harry Kane who could propel them forward further than ever before.
