Tools and Equipment You’ll Need to Prepare the Ground for Artificial Gras

Installing artificial grass is a complex process that requires proper planning and preparation. One of the most important steps is preparing the ground and base so the fake grass turf can be securely installed. Having the right tools and equipment makes this process much easier. Here are the key items for commercial artificial grass installation or installing residential turf grass in your yard.

    Site Evaluation

Before beginning any work, you need to evaluate the site thoroughly. This allows you to identify any issues and plan accordingly. Useful tools include:

Measuring tape – Measure the lawn’s dimensions to calculate how much artificial turf you need.

String lines – Mark straight lines on the lawn to map out the turf area.

Shovel – Take core samples to analyze the existing soil and determine if amendments are needed.

pH soil test kit – Test the soil’s pH balance, which affects what base materials to use.

Camera – Document site conditions for your records.

    Ground Preparation

Prepping the ground involves removing any existing grass, plants, or debris and then leveling the area. Helpful equipment includes:

Rototiller – Thoroughly till up any existing grass, plants, and roots.

Rake – Smooth out the ground and remove stones or sticks after tilling.

Sledgehammer – Break up heavily compacted areas that are difficult to till.

Shovel and pickaxe – Dig out edging around landscaping or hardscaped areas.

Leveling rake – Fine-grade the area to remove bumps or dips.

Plate compactor – Compact and harden the bare ground before installing base materials.

    Drainage

Proper drainage is crucial for artificial grass installation. Equipment you may need includes:

Excavator – Dig trenches around the perimeter and for French drains across the area.

Landscape fabric – Line the trenches to prevent soil from clogging the drainage system.

Gravel – Fill trenches to facilitate drainage.

Drainage pipes – Install corrugated pipes in French drains to direct water away.

    Base Materials

Artificial grass requires a solid base to support the turf. Tools to install the base layers are:

Wheelbarrow and shovel – Spread and level the crushed stone aggregate base.

Plate compactor – Compact the aggregate in 2” lifts.

Concrete screed – Create a perfectly flat, smooth surface for the turf underlayment.

Measuring tape – Check depths and verify the base is level.

    Artificial Grass Installation

Finally, with the ground fully prepped, it’s time to install the synthetic grass. Useful equipment consists of:

Utility knife – Cut the turf to fit irregular shapes.

Seaming tape – Join turf seams and secure edges.

Outdoor carpet glue – Adhere grass sections to the underlayment.

Turf roller – Remove wrinkles and creases in the artificial turf.

Hammer and nails – Anchor the perimeter and seams.

Broom – Brush grains vertically and smooth any ruffled blades.

Having the proper tools for each step of ground preparation and installation is key to building a lasting foundation for your artificial grass. Contact our artificial grass experts for professional guidance on installing football turf fields or backyard residential turf grass.
