Beyond Painkillers: How Natural Supplements Support Post-Workout Recovery

Once your workout is complete and your body sore, you usually think about painkillers like ibuprofen, aspirin, or other medications that help you to get quick relief. A great deal of the time, this could be the easiest option. However, using too many medications is not the safest option over time. Taking medications for recovery can lead to other problems such as stomach issues, liver damage, or kidney issues. For this reason, many workout junkies, athletes, or health conscious people are searching for natural methods to help recovery. Supplementing natural products is just as effective without the worry of taking medications for pain relief. Natural methods can help reduce pain, repair muscle tissue, and improve healing.

Why Recovery Is Important

Recovery is an important part of a physical activity or exercise program. Anytime you exercise or do an activity, such as weight lifting, running, cycling, or yoga, you create small micro-tears in the muscle fibers. This is a normal part of the process and is needed to enhance strength and endurance.

However, the body requires time to regenerate muscle tissue, heal the small injuries, or rebuild. The body works hard to repair tissues and also eliminate waste products, like lactic acid, both after your exercises and throughout each epoch of exercise. If recovery is short, or even neglected, then your body does not perform at its normal levels. You may feel tired, unable to concentrate, unmotivated, or these symptoms may be so pronounced where you are not able to engage in any exercise at all.

Recovery enhances the impact of the inflammatory response that often accompanies some amount of stress or strain your body feels. Some inflammation is good, however excessive inflammation can slow the recovery process and also create rigidity in your muscles which can even lead to tenderness or pain. Nutrition, adequate sleep, or nutritional supplements can assist in quickening the recovery process and can even promote recovery to become stronger than before.

Natural Supplements That Support Recovery

Your body can be aided in the recovery process by many natural supplements. Rather than functioning like a painkiller which just blocks the body’s natural sense of pain, these supplements help the body to work to decrease inflammation, repair tissue and promote overall recovery from within.

Magnesium is one markedly important mineral. Magnesium is required for over 300 different processes in the human body including nerve functions, muscle relaxation, and energy production. Muscle cramps and fatigue are commonly related to low magnesium levels. Taking magnesium after a workout may help relax your muscles and reduce the likelihood of cramping/stiffness. Magnesium may also enhance your sleep which is a critical component of recovery.

Turmeric, and more specifically the compound curcumin, is another beneficial supplement. Curcumin is a highly anti-inflammatory and antioxidant chemical. It has been used in traditional medicine for centuries for the treatment of swelling and pain. Today, there is scientific evidence suggesting that curcumin may reduce joint pain and muscle soreness following exercise. Some individuals take curcumin in capsule form or mixed into smoothies and teas.

Omega-3 fatty acids, present in fish oil, are beneficial for heart health and also help in muscle recovery. Omega-3s may help reduce muscle damage and inflammation after exercise. Some clinical studies suggest that omega-3 supplements reduce the severity and length of muscle soreness and recovery as long as exercise is intense or new to the person.

Adequate protein intake also aids in recovery. If you are physically active, your muscles require protein to rebuild, which is why athletes consume protein shakes and/or protein based meals (i.e., meat, eggs, legumes) post-fitness session. Athletes also may consume branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are a family of necessary amino acids to help with repair after exercise and reduce muscle breakdown during some aspect of the fitness bout.

Each of these different supplements help with different parts to the recovery process so they are a benefit to the active athlete wanting to recover quickly.

The Role of Bromelain in Recovery

Bromelain is one supplement worth mentioning for recovery. It is a natural enzyme found in the stem and juice of pineapples. It has been researched for a number of years and has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties. The German term for the effects or benefits of bromelain is “bromelain wirkung“. Research suggests that bromelain can help reduce swelling, promote healing, and assist in muscle recovery after exercise and injury. Bromelain supports the body’s ability to break down proteins and remove waste products from damaged tissue, which may assist in the recovery process.

Unlike traditional analgesics, bromelain does not merely block the pain signals. Bromelain actually supports the body’s repair systems. Studies indicated that bromelain can also aid in reducing delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), or soreness felt 1-2 days after a workout.

Bromelain is also used for other purposes, such as post-surgical recovery for bruising and inflammation. If an athlete wants to support recovery, while not consuming NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories), then bromelain can be added to their recovery toolbox. Nutrador produces a convenient method to ingest bromelain; Nutrador Bromelain Kapseln each contain 250 mg of bromelain. Taking one capsule at least once a day may help to reduce soreness and is a plant-based option to help with healing, when taken post activity.

A Safer Way to Recover

Natural supplements are not a cure-all. They work best alongside all the good habits we should be incorporating daily into our lives; drinking water, eating well, sleeping, and stretching regularly after physical activity. That being said, use of certain natural supplements (e.g., magnesium, turmeric, omega-3s, protein, bromelain) can provide that extra help your body may need for recovery.

Natural recovery supplements will act much more mildly than over-the-counter pain relief. They support recovery rather than masking the pain. That being said, it is prudent to consult with a medical professional prior to taking any new supplements, especially if you take other medications, have issues related to a disease, etc.

In short, if you take care of your body and employ recovery after activity, you will be able to stay consistent with your activity and be less likely to get injured in the future. Natural supplements are of course part of the answer to helping muscles, managing inflammation, and supporting healing, when it comes to your fitness lifestyle.
